Course content
Everyone experiences being the giver and the receiver of help. With the students experiential knowledge as a starting point studying the connection between different approaches in counselling and helping practices will be facilitated. Emphasis will be on understanding different views on humanity as well as conditions for helping processes. Important perspectives for clarification and reflection about such contexts are found in theories about power, powerlessness, trust, mistrust, relational quality, dialogue and mutuality. Especially a focus on helping roles, helping relations and different types of helping activities will generate a basis for exemplifying helping functions and practical experimenting. Through exercises students can discover something new by reflecting upon, communicating with and acting in relation to different helping situations as well as helping needs. The development of both theoretical and practical knowledge will be facilitated based on the needs for helping and counselling on individual, group and organisational levels. In addition, emphasis will be on the development of self understanding and self awareness in the students own helping orientation.
Learning outcome
In this course the students will acquire knowledge about the counselling field and its basic helping perspectives and orientations, and will develop insight into how helping can be facilitated both in individual spheres and in social contexts. Furthermore, the students will acquire theoretical understanding, skills and practise in facilitating helping processes on both individual and group levels.
