VB6047 - Introduction to water and environmental Engineerin g

About

New from the academic year 2024/2025

Course content

The course deals with important challenges and solutions in water and environmental engineering, and is divided into three main themes.

The first theme introduces the main national and international challenges in water and the environment, such as climate change, public health, infrastructure decay and water pollution.

The second theme provides basic theoretical knowledge in the following:

  • Fluid mechanics (fluid flow and Bernoulli's equation, flow in open channels),
  • water supply systems (water sources, water needs, simple water treatment methods, calculation of reservoir volume and regulation heights, dimensioning of pressure lines, pumps and pump systems),
  • wastewater systems (wastewater composition, dimensioning of separate-combined sewer lines, centralized and decentralized sewage system, wastewater treatment methods, combined sewer overflows, discharge to recipients)
  • stormwater systems (hydrology, rational method, dimensioning of stormwater collection systems, stormwater management, overflow).

The third theme provides an introduction to programming and digital tools for dimensioning simple water and environmental engineering facilities.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

The candidate must be able to

  • Give an account of important challenges in the field of water and environmental engineering
  • Explain technical systems for water supply, storm water and wastewater management Give an account of basic water quality and compositions of wastewater
  • Give an account of common methods for water treatment, sewage treatment and stormwater management
  • Carry out simple calculations for the dimensioning of water, storm water and wastewater lines
  • Carry out simple calculations for the dimensioning of pump systems
  • Carry out simple dimensioning of water and environmental engineering facilities using programmering and digital tools.

Skills

The candidate can

  • Outline the technical structure of water and environmental engineering facilities associated with water supply, stormwater management and sewage treatment and explain simple connections
  • Choose between simple methods for water treatment, sewage treatment and stormwater management
  • Make hydraulic calculations of simple water and wastewater systems as well as use digital tools in this regard.

General competence

The candidate must

  • Understand the importance of environmental considerations within the construction field and how to work with this in the direction of sustainable and smart water infrastructure.
  • Present results and analyzes both in writing and orally.
  • Update their knowledge within the field through information gathering Master professional expressions and communicate with other professionals.

Learning methods and activities

Projectoriented lectures and exercises related to basic theories. Problem-based tasks for calculation and assessment of solutions in technical systems in practice. Fieldwork and lab exercises related to the basic theory are arranged. Inspections in water and environmental engineering facilities. Use of programming and digital tools.

3 - 5 mandatory work requirements.

Compulsory assignments

  • Compulsory assignment

Further on evaluation

Final grade is based on two elements which both must be passed:

  • 1 project report based on group work.
  • 1 written individual digital exam.

If fail on project report/group work, an improved project report can be submitted within September 1st. Re-sit of digital individual written exam in August. Resit exam can be implemented for some parts without all assessments need to be retaken. It is given the opportunity to complain about parts of this topic before all subtasks have been completed.

Mandatory work requirements related to academic text, multiple-choice assignments and programming are required to be approved before one can take the individual examination.

Mandatory work requirements related to oral presentation of a project are required to be approved before one can prepare for the group examination (report).
