Course content

- The student shall pick a specific problem of relevance to the master program - The topic must represent a challenge within the specific area and it is required that the student adheres to practices that are common within the area - The topic must be pre-approved by the supervisor.

Learning outcome

The thesis shall demonstrate the student's ability to define and complete a scientific project with the aim to produce new knowledge. The thesis shall demonstrate the student's: Knowledge: - choosing a relevant method or methods according to the problem definition - carry out the project - discuss and reflect on the results achieved - draw conclusions and make recommendations Skills: - choose a project that has the potential to contribute to the scientific knowledge in the field - carry out the project and reflect on the results - write the scientific thesis in English of a high standard - present the scientific results clearly General competence: - acquire and demonstrate a Scientific approach - improve skills in writing and presenting Scientific results

Learning methods and activities

Project work, seminar and tutoring

Requirements: Approved Master thesis agreement. The student must present a project status report to the supervisor within 3 months and demonstrate that the project can be completed according to the project plan or, alternatively, adjust the plan accordingly to ensure a successful outcome. Progress reporting must be made to the supervisor weekly. The student is encouraged to present the master thesis/topic in a recorded oral presentation.

Further on evaluation

If fail (F), the student is given a new chance to submit a new or a revised thesis, to be submitted in the following semester. See Academic Regulations for the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) §5-9. Assessment according to grade descriptions given by The Norwegian Assosiation of Higher Educcation Institutions (UHR - Universitets- og høgskolerådet)

Specific conditions

Admission to a programme of study is required.

Required previous knowledge

70 ECTS must have been approved before the student can attend the master thesis course

Course materials

Course materiel is decided upon in dialogue with individual supervisor. Scientific publications should be reviewed as required for the topic that has been chosen. Relevant literature from earlier courses is recommended.
