About the course

Course content

Drilling of subsea wells, procedures and challenges to operation performed from floating vessels. Handling and operation of marine drilling riser, riser margin, positioning of vessel and mooring systems. Overview of alternative solutions for field development. Criteria for selection of subsea solution. Elements of subsea production systems. Guidebase, wellhead, X-Mas tree configuration, manifold and piping systems, downhole and subea pumping and processing systems, control systems for production and well intervention. Methods for well intervention, handling of equipment from floating vessel, requirements for vessel and systems for heave compensating. Safety and reliability considerations. Trend and future technology development for subsea completed wells.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:
The student should have knowledge about:
- System and method for drilling and completion of subsea wells.
- Various methods for subsea production.
- Components and systems in underwater construction.
- Anchoring methods.
- Well maintenance.

Skills:
The student is able to:
- Evaluate and analyse alternative subsea solutions based on given parameters.
- Calculate pressure conditions and loads associated with drilling of subsea wells.
- Calculate valve and actuator performance.
- Calculate stress in critical components.
- Characterize corrosion damage and estimation of life time.
- Evaluate alternative methods for well maintenance.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and exercises. Lectures will be held in English if international masterstudents should participate. If the teaching is given in English, the examination papers will be given in English only. Students are free to choose Norwegian or English for written assessments. The exam can be changed from written to oral at the postponed exams (continuation exam).
