Course content

3D visualization of petroleum data. Overview of visualization techniques applicable to analysis and simulation within petroleum technology and petroleum geoscience. Demonstration of techniques and industrial solutions. Fundamentals of computer graphics. Implementation of visual applications by means of OpenGL programming interface and shaders. Handling of large data sets.

Learning outcome

Ingress: The students should gain an overview of 3D visualization techniques applicable to analysis and simulation within petroleum technology and petroleum geosciences and be able to implement the visualization techniques by means of OpenGL graphics.

Knowledge: The students should gain an overview of relevant visualization techniques and be able to adapt the techniques to enable effective interpretation of analysis and simulation results concerning petroleum technology and petroleum geosciences.

Digital Component: The students should be able to implement visualization techniques by C/C++ programming using the OpenGL application programming interface. Furthermore, they should be able to program graphics cards for a selected set of visualization purposes using the OpenGL Shading Language.

General competence: The students should understand that visualization may be exploited in a variety of engineering disciplines for effective interpretation of simulations and know the foundation for developing solutions.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and compulsory exercises. Presentation and discussion of applicable techniques for visualization purposes, examples and sample program code. Discussion of exercises. The course will be taught in English if international master's students participate. Course evaluation is by reference group.

Compulsory assignments

  • Exercises
