Course content
This course is offered in conjunction with TPD4505 Design Theory, Specialization Course, and cannot be chosen separately. The course offers students the opportunity to specialize in a particular aspect of Industrial Design. Building on the theoretical insights acquired during the writing of a scientific article for TPD4505, the students are offered the possibility to develop knowledge through a design research or exploration project of their own choice. This can for example involve conducting a survey, interview study or experiment, and developing a concept, prototype, manual or method relevant for the chosen area of specialization. All results must be open for publication.
Students are to reflect over the sustainability aspects in relation to their project, from a material, environmental, social and behavioural perspective (depending on the focus of the project), using insights and methods they have acquired earlier in the curriculum.
Learning outcome
Knowledge:
The candidate
- has through the literature study in the subject TPD4505 Design Theory obtained in-depth knowledge in the field the candidate wishes to specialize. This knowledge is used in the project, and further studies are carried out based on the needs of the project.
- has knowledge about key theories and methods in their area of specialization, and how these can be used in a design research or exploration project.
Skills:
The candidate
- has performed a larger independent project in their chosen field of specialization, based on a literature study, and practiced skills to use, develop and reflect on this. The candidate's reflection shall explicitly address sustainability aspect of the project
- can define goals for a design research or exploration project, select relevant theories and methods and apply these
- can discuss the use of theory and methods, and their own findings and conclusions.
General qualifications:
The candidate
- has strengthened their identity and competence in a chosen area of design.
Learning methods and activities
Theoretical or practical specialization project, partly based on literature studies and design theory.
Further on evaluation
Evaluation is done based on an assignment conducted individually or in pairs, that includes a concise report and a poster suitable for exhibition. For a re-take of an examination, all assessments during the course must be re-taken.
Specific conditions
Admission to a programme of study is required:
