About the course

Course content

The course focuses on structural packaging design, where the packaging design and functionality is at the center from production to recycling. Graphic design, with emphasis on the functional, is also included in the course. The following areas will be examined: packaging trends and packaging needs, choice of packaging type, protection of the product, material and production, filling and packing, storage and transport, distribution channels, exposure, customer experience and ease of use, packaging optimization, sustainability and recycling, regulations and rules.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

  • The candidate has acquired basic knowledge in structural packaging design.

Skills:

  • Goal oriented product design, focusing on the possibilities and limitations in packaging design.

General qualifications:

  • The candidate has explored the role of packaging in the marketing context.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, assignments, project work, model making and industry excursions. Course program requires students to be present at lectures.

Further on evaluation

Project assignments. Verbal presentation of the results is included in the project assignments.

For a re-take of an examination, all assessments during the course must be re-taken.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Industrial Design (MSDESIG)
Industrial Design Engineering (MTDESIG)

Required previous knowledge

The course is limited to students of Industrial Design. It is assumed that students can use Fusion 360, SolidWorks or equivalent modeling program.
