Principally this course will make the student able to understand the principles and mode of operation different navigationsystems available on a modern ship, and be able to operate these systems. The student should also be able to perform optical signalling.By satisfactory completion of the ECDIS/AIS part of the course, the student will receive an ECDIS/AIS course diploma approved by the Norwegian Maritime Directorate. This course covers the theoretical requirenments in table A-II/1-2 in the STCW convenon.
Learning outcome
Demonstrate basic knowledge and understanding of the common modern electronic navigationsystems available onboard ships
Carry out positional fixing and safe navigation by the means of modern navigationsystems
Send and receive information by the means of optical signalling

Lectures, laboratory work, CBT, simulator
Mandatory assignments:
Coursework must be approved to qualify for final examinaton. Simulator exercises must be approved to qualify for final examinaton.

Navigation Systems: 4 hours written examination - 8 credits
Signalling: practical examination - 1 credit (Pass/No pass)
Simulator: practical examination - 2 credits (Pass/No pass)
All exams must be passed in order to complete the course. Re-sit examination:Students are entitled to re-sit only the part of the examination in which they have had legitimate reasons for an absence or have failed.
