Course content

This course provides an overview of fundamental topics in inorganic chemistry. Bond theory: Atomic orbitals importance for chemical bonding, covalent bonding, ionic and lattice enthalpy, metal bonding, metals, semiconductors and insulators, forces between molecules, the structure of molecules, liquids and solids. Molecular orbital theory, crystal field and ligand field theory. Defects and non-stoichiometry. Acid-base chemistry. Introduction to coordination compounds. Synthesis / preparation of inorganic compounds and materials. The elements adn their compounds: Review of the element's chemical properties, with emphasis on periodic properties. The course will provide a foundation for further education in chemistry directed towards materials, catalysis, energy technology and process chemistry.

Learning outcome

After completing the course the student will be able to:
- Explain the atomic structure based on quantum mechanics and explain periodic properties of the atoms.
- Explain the structure and bonding in molecules / ions and predict the structure of molecules / ions.
- Explain selected crystal structures, explain what kind of parameters that affect the crystal structure of a compound and perform calculations of the lattice enthalpy of ionic compounds.
- Explain the band structure of solids and determine the electrical properties.
- Explain the different definitions of acids / bases and predict the reactions between acids and bases.
- Explain the definition of coordination compounds, naming them and decide isomerism.
- Explaining the theory of the determination of the electron structure of d-metal complexes and explain the properties of these complexes.
- Explain the periodic properties of the different groups of compounds focusing on production methods and application of selected elements and compounds.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, demonstrations, written assignments, 2 midterm tests and laboratory exercises. 50 % of the written exercises has to be approved. The laboratory exercises must be approved to take the exam. Expected time spent on this course: Lectures: 80 timer, Laboratory work: 20 timer. Exercises: 30 timer. Self study: 80 timer"

Compulsory assignments

  • Semesterprøve
  • Semesterprøve
  • Exercises
  • Laboratory coarse

Further on evaluation

Portfolio evaluation with a final digital written exam and to mid-term tests. The final exam counts 76 % and each of the mid-term tests count 12 %. The results for the parts are given in %-scores, while the entire portfolio is assigned a letter grade.

If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may change from written to oral.
The student does not need to redo an approved project work.
