Course content

Basic instrumentation techniques, measurement using strain gauges, equipment and methods for data acquisition. Introduction to advanced measurement techniques, such as Particle Image Velocimetry. Calibration of measurement equipment. Techniques for model construction. CFD programs, grid generation and visualisation.
How to carry out typical model tests, such as: resistance, propulsion, propeller open water, cavitation tests, seakeeping tests, tests with slender structures. In some cases, numerical simulations comparable to the model tests will be carried out. Uncertainty Analysis. Error sources in experiments and numerical calculations. Special considerations for full scale measurements.

Learning outcome

- To get to know different measurement techniques and instrumentation in use in experimental marine hydrodynamics.
- To get practical knowledge of important hydrodynamic phenomena, like resonance, vortex induced vibrations and ship resistance.
- To get to know the most important types of model tests in use in experimental marine hydrodynamics.
- To understand uncertainty analysis of experiments, and to be able to calculate the precision error from repeated measurements.
- To write laboratory reports.
- To know panel methods (potential flow) and what their applications.
- To experience the numerically related challenges in panel methods compared to viscous flow calculations (CFD).
- To get experience with grid generation, boundary conditions and how the choice of parameters influence the results.
- To be able to visualize simulation results and evaluate them against knowledge of marine hydrodynamics.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and mandatory lab exercises, which are carried out in groups. Exercises/projects in numerical methods in groups. Grade is given based on delivered exercise reports.

Required previous knowledge

The course is only accessible for students admitted to the master programme Marine Technology, Maritime Engineering and Wind Energy.
