About

About the course

Course content

Basic fishery ecology, ocean environment, fisheries management, laws and regulations. Main principles for concept development and design of such vessels. The use of LCA, modelling and analyses of fishing operations as design tools. Fishing methods, catch handling methods, deck machinery systems for gearhandling and catch-handling. Principles and instrumentation for fish finding and navigation. Ergonomics and safety considerations in wheelhouse-, accommodation- and fishing system design. Methods for estimating forces from towed objects, fishing gear and lifting gear and their effect on safety and stability. Resistance and powering calculations for fishing vessels and workboats, operating profiles for machinery systems with highly variable loading. Design of such systems for minimum fuel consumption.

Learning outcome

The course shall enable the students to design fishing vessel, workboats and small vessels with due regard for the boundary conditions and functional requirements governing their operations.

Learning methods and activities

The course consists of two main parts:
1. Lectures and colloquial group based discussions.
2. A team based vessel design project.
Student groups/lecturer introduce themes for discussions. Portfolio assessment is the basis for the grade in the course. The portfolio includes an oral exam (60%) and exercises (40%). The results for the parts are given in %-scores, while the entire portfolio is assigned a letter grade. Examination papers will be given in English only. Students are free to choose Norwegian or English for written assessments.
