Course content
The course consists of three themes that partly are given in parallel, integrated with each other, and which together form a whole.
1. Application of marine technology in vessels and offshore activities, including an excursion aboard a ship. It includes report writing, presentation skills and technical drawing. It furthermore gives an introduction to the Norwegian maritime industry with a description of the marine ocean and marine resources, the marine industrial cluster, administration, legislation and regulations.
2. Hydrostatics and stability of marine vessels.
3. Design of marine systems. The design process: key activities, documents and milestones. Requirements management, functional analysis, choice of solution concept, dimensions and arrangement. Calculation of weights and costs.
Learning outcome
Courses Marine technology 1, 2, 3 and 4 together enable the students to describe and understand the marine disciplines and carry out engineering related to design, construction and operation of ships, platforms and other marine systems. They will also give students a proper set of methods and tools to perform such work, as well as training in teamwork and communication.
After completing the first course TMR4105, the student should be able to (in a basic way):
- Understand and describe how the marine disciplines interact.
- Understand and apply marine technical terminology and language, oral and written.
- Understand and use technical descriptions and drawings of marine vessels.
- Understand and map the interaction of technical systems on board marine vessels.
- Be able to perform laboratory experiments in an effective manner within the requirements of HSE (health, safety and environment), and analyze and evaluate the results of these.
- Understand how marine vessels are designed and built, and perform a simple design task of a marine system.
- Be able to perform calculations of hull buoyancy, buoyancy distribution and load capacity of floating vessels.
- Be able to perform simple calculations of static and dynamic stability in intact condition.
- Apply computer-based tools for calculations of hydrostatics and stability.
- Be able to plan and implement a holistic design of a single vessel in collaboration with other students within agreed limits and time, and effectively report and present the results.
Learning methods and activities
The themes are illustrated through lectures, assignments, laboratory activities and project work.
Portfolio assessment is the basis for the grade in the course. The course will also include a mandatory course in basic health, safety and environmental work (HSE) and in practical work operations. The course includes a mandatory seminar series that requires at least 50% participation.
Compulsory assignments
- Exercises
- HSE-course

Further on evaluation
Portfolio assessment is the basis for the grade in the course. It includes a report of the design project (30%), a task (20%) and oral exam (50%). To pass the course, all parts of the exam must be evaluated and given a passed grade level. The results for the parts are given in %-scores, while the entire portfolio is assigned a letter grade. For a re-take of an examination, all the assignments in the portfolio must be re-taken.
