Course content

The course consists of three themes that partly are given in parallel, integrated with each other, and which together form a whole. 1. Application of marine technology in vessels. It includes report writing, presentation skills and technical drawing. It furthermore gives an introduction to the Norwegian maritime industry with a description of the marine ocean and marine resources, the marine industrial cluster, administration, legislation and regulations. 2. Hydrostatics and stability of marine vessels. 3. Design of marine systems. The design process: key activities, documents and milestones. Requirements, functional analysis, choice of solution concept, dimensions and arrangement. Measures of merit.

Learning outcome

The subjects Marine Technology - Basics, - Structures,- Hydrodynamics and - Propulsion systems, safety and environment, shall together enable the students to describe and understand the basics of marine technology and carry out engineering tasks related to design, construction and operation of marine systems. In addition they shall give the students a proper set of tools and methods for carrying out such work and training in the skills of communication and teamwork.

After completing the first course TMR4105, the student should be able to (in a basic way):

  • Understand and describe how the marine disciplines interact.
  • Understand and apply marine technical terminology and language, oral and written.
  • Understand and use technical descriptions and drawings of marine vessels.
  • Understand and map the interaction of technical systems on board marine vessels.
  • Be able to perform laboratory experiments in an effective manner within the requirements of HSE (health, safety and environment), and analyze and evaluate the results of these.
  • Understand how marine vessels are designed and built, and perform a simple design task of a marine system.
  • Be able to perform calculations of hull buoyancy, buoyancy distribution and load capacity of floating vessels.
  • Be able to perform calculations of static and dynamic stability in intact condition.
  • Apply computer-based tools for calculations of hydrostatics and stability.
  • Evaluate the economical and environmental sustainability of a project in a life cycle perspective.
  • Be able to plan and implement a holistic design of a single vessel in collaboration with other students within agreed limits and time, and effectively report and present the results.

Learning methods and activities

The topics are illustrated through lectures, assignments, laboratory activities, excursion and project work. The course will also include a mandatory course in basic health, safety and environmental work (HSE).

Compulsory assignments

  • Exercises
  • HSE-course
  • Laboratory test
  • Excursion

Further on evaluation

The final assessment of the course is divided in three parts. The assessment includes a report of the project work (30%), an oral exam (30%) and a final written exam (40%). The results for the parts are given in letter grades. In order to pass the course, all parts of the exam must be passed.

If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may change from written to oral. For a re-take of an examination, all assessments during the course must be re-taken.

Each member of the group is expected to contribute to the project work at the same level as the other members of the group. As a starting point all group members get the same grade if they all contribute equally. If discrepancies are observed, the group members may be graded individually.
