Course content
The student shall make an in-depth study of a specific topic within engineering design and materials. The work shall be based on scientific methods; collecting knowledge through a literature studies or other means, and combine this with knowledge acquired through previous and current studies. A project plan with milestones shall be made, and the student shall continuously report progress and results during the work and write a final project report according to current standards.
Learning outcome
Knowledge: The student shall have knowledge on using and adapting existing methods, mainly within selected course module, for problem solving within the disciplines of the department. Moreover, s/he shall know how to organize, limit (scope), plan, do and act within a project. The candidate shall also know how systematic technical problem solving and research shall be reported to provide required integrity and value.
Technical skills: The student must be able to prepare a project plan with milestones, report partial results and write a project report in accordance with established standards. The candidate shall be able to perform technical work of limited scope within existing framework, generating results that supports conclusions in relation to the main objectives of the work. S/he shall master writing of technical reports and communication, technically as well as on a more general basis.
General competence: The student shall on general basis be able to apply captured knowledge, competence and skills to carry through tasks that are less structured and more similar to the needs and tasks that s/he will face in the practical (working) life after graduation.
Learning methods and activities
Independent project work with supervision. Guidance in English if non-Scandinavian students take the course.

Information about writing and submitting your project can be found on NTNU's website under your department. If the project is performed as group work, the students and supervisor shall make an agreement (preferably at start-up) about individual or joint assessment of the final project report. The project has to be submitted in NTNU's examination system Inspera Assessment. For a re-take of an examination, all assessments during the course must be re-taken.
