Learning outcome

Knowledge:
An MSc candidate has knowledge of:
- The main principles in different joining processes, including arc welding, beam welding, solid state welding, brazing and soldering methods and adhesive bonding.
- Basic theory of heat flow in welding, and its impact on properties.
- The fundamental chemical-metallurgical reactions taking place in welding.
- Solidification, grain growth and phase transformations.

Skills:
An MSc candidate can:
- The response of mostly used structural materials to welding, how they are inspected, tested and qualified.
- The different methods to evaluate a material’s weldability.
- Practical use of heat flow theory to estimate the cooling conditions and width of different local brittle zones.

General competence:
An MSc candidate can:
- Select among different welding/joining processes.
- Evaluate risk of welding defects or cracking.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and video. Voluntary calculation and descriptive excercises. Compulsory laboratory will be scheduled. The lectures and exercises are in English when students who do not speak Norwegian take the course. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
