Course content
Design of a process plant, usually after a feasibility study and selection between process alternatives. Development of the process flow sheet, calculation of mass- and energy balances. Choice and dimensioning of the major equipment components. Conditions concerning start-up, shutdown and process control. Environmental and safety evaluation. Estimates of investment, working capital and operating expenses. Economic evaluation of the project.
Learning outcome
At the end of the course the students should: - Have knowledge about the chosen process technology. - Be able to search for and apply methods for sizing of process equipment. - Be able toSearch for and apply information for the selection of construction materials. - Understand the effect of recycling in process flow diagrams. - Understand when and why we need purge in recycle loops. - Know the use of commercial process simulation tools to model process systems and to perform steady-state simulations with design requirements. - Optimize the operation conditions. - Apply the pinch analysis technology and target the maximum energy recovery of a plant, in addition to design a heat exchanger network for maximum energy recovery. - Calculate the necessary size of process equipment. - Estimate the cost of the major equipment based on the required capacities. - Estimate the total capital cost and operations cost. - Perform profitability analyses of the project.
Learning methods and activities
Project work in groups of 2 - 4 students, supplemented with a weekly conference with the advisor.
Further on evaluation
The projects are presented on posters in addition to the group report.
