Course content

The course consists of a theoretical and a practical part.

The students will learn about the first and second law, chemical equilibrium, thermodynamics of mixtures (binary and tertiary mixtures, alloys), colligative properties, and phase equilibria. Basic knowledge about electrochemical cells. Mean activity coefficients of electrolytes.

Learning outcome

After finishing the course, the student is expected to:

  • Know the laws of thermodynamics and be able to explain how they are derived.
  • Use these laws to calculate the heat and work produced in central processes in nature and engineering. Examples contain phase transitions, chemical and electrochemical reactions.
  • Be able to define a partial molar property, and understand when these properties are relevant.
  • Explain Gibbs-Duhem's equation and know how it is derived.
  • Be able to evaluate measured properties, as they are obtained in the laboratory.
  • Be able to describe the movement of ions and molecules.
  • Know how to write a professional report from a laboratory project.
  • Know how to handle in a responsible way regarding safety issues in relation to practical experiments.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures (4 hours), exercises (2 hours per week) and laboratory work. As part of the compulsory laboratory course includes a mandatory (subject specific) safety lecture. Attendance required to access the laboratory. Normally this will take place in the week before the lab-exercises start. Information about the time-schedule of the required activities during the semester will be announced by the course coordinator at the beginning of the semester on Blackboard. The laboratory course and 50% of the exercises have to be approved before the final examination. Also, attendance at the HMS lecture is compulsory.

Expected work load in the course is 200-225 hours.

If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral. For a re-take of an examination, the assessments during the course do not have to be re-taken.
