About the course

Course content

The students need to have their choice of specialization and project approved by the department during the semester before they start this specialization project. A list of possible projects will be available before the students need to choose specialization. Each project might have its own requirements for 4th year courses and the project supervisor needs to approve the students choice of specialization course. The actual academic content will vary with the chosen project.

Learning outcome

The course will aim at increasing the student's ability to do practical or theoretical work in connection to economical analysis or optimization in industrial settings. The position and function of the course in the study program: The course is compulsory for the students in their 5th year within the specialization "Managerial Economics and Operations Research". The course will give the students an in-depth knowledge and competence to approach and understand a technical-economical problem and at the same time specify, model and solve the problem. Knowledge achieved in the course: - Detailed knowledge about modeling, theory and methods within their chosen topic – Detailed knowledge about implementation, possible applications and solutions of topic specific challenges within their chosen topic. Skills achieved in the course: - Skills to structure technical - economical planning problems such that they can be modeled – Skills to choose an appropriate method for solving a problem – Skills to use appropriate tools to implement the model and method such that it is possible to carry out technical and economical analyses and discussions. General knowledge learnt in the course: - The student should have learnt to write a scientific report – The student should have learnt and practiced how to search for relevant literature to achieve completive knowledge – The student should have achieved general knowledge about economical analyses and optimization in industrial settings with both technical and economical aspects. – The student should have a basis to communicate in a meaningful way with both pure economists and pure technologist about combined technological and economical problems.

Learning methods and activities

The project is a large written exercise in the topic of applied economics and operations research. There will be regular supervision meetings in addition to the students independent work. The project is normally performed by groups of two students.

Required previous knowledge

Students need to have the following courses taken in the fourth year: TIØ4130 Optimization Methods, TIØ4150 Industrial Optimization and TIØ4285 Production- and Network Economics.Students that take this project course need at the same time to take TIØ4505 Managerial Economics and Operations Research, Specialization Course.
