Course content

The course will provide an introduction to the physical working environment factors and indoor air. For all fields there will lectures on terminology, definitions and incidence of the relevant factor. What health effects can occur and when and where they act. How can you identify and assess this factors and what rules, methods and limits are available. What is risk and what measures are effective and how can they be used to reduce exposure. What legislation exists within the area. Measurement methods will be reviewed and demonstrated in the lab. attempt.

The contents of the course are in particular relevant to UN's Sustainable Development Goals SDG 3 about om Good health and well-being (target 3.9: By 2030 substantially reduce the number of deaths and illnesses from hazardous chemicals and air, water, and soil pollution and contamination) and SDG 8: Decent work and economic growth (target 8.8 promote safe and secure working environment for all workers)

Learning outcome

Position and function of the course in the study: The course is advanced course in occupational hygiene for students on study programs MHMS and MIHMS, Otherwise open to siv.ing students who have followed TIØ4186 Occupational Health and Safety after application to the teacher. The course will provide knowledge about the following: General knowledge of the different work areas of an occupational hygienist. General knowledge on toxicology and health effects from agents to which workers may be exposed in industry today. Specific knowledge of methods for performing risk assessments in the work environment and of the factors that makes the basis of these risk assessments. General knowledge of epidemiology. Specific knowledge of strategies for assessing and controlling noise and chemical exposure. Specific knowledge of different measures for reducing risk from chemical exposure and noise. The course shall give the student skills in analyzing and assess physical and chemical factors in the working environment. Other important learning outcome is to be able to report the results of an occupational hygiene risk assessment in an appropriate manner

Lectures, compulsory laboratory exercises and compulsory term paper.

Sub assignment is the basis for the grade in the course. The sub assignment consist of a term paper (40%) and a final written school exam (60%). If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral. For a re-take, if already passed, all assessments in the portfolio must be re-taken.

Required previous knowledge

This course is reserved for students of the master's programme in Health, environment and safety (MIHMS and MHMS). Other students can only participate upon application to the Course Coordinator.
