Course content
Engineering geological field and laboratory methods. The course includes compulsory field course at Snåsa organized in August (week no 33), laboratory testing in September/October and writing of a report from the field and laboratory work, in addition to an oral exam.
Learning outcome
Ingress: This course will provide in-depth knowledge in engineering geology.
Knowledge: The student will acquire specialized knowledge to plan and design projects within engineering geology of soils and rocks.
Skills: The student will be able to independently carry out field and laboratory investigations, to find scientific literature, and be able to search the main elements, which are relevant to the project.
General competence: Increased understanding in the field of engineering geology, investigation approaches, report writing skills, planning and design of structures with sustainable and cost effective solutions.
Learning methods and activities
4-5 days of compulsory field mapping and 4-5 days of laboratory testing in groups under direct supervision. Writing of report based on the field and lab assignments (in groups). The field mapping will take place in week no 33. Students should avoid other activities during this week. There will be no other field mapping activity possible.
Compulsory assignments
- Fied course
Further on evaluation
The report from the field course is submitted in groups, the final exam is individual. The report counts for 50% of the final grade. Oral exam counts 50%.
In order to be eligible to receive a grade in the course, both assessments must receive a passing score. Students who have passed the course and would like to try to improve their grade will only re-take the exam. Students who have failed the course but passed the group report will only re-take the exam.
Specific conditions
Admission to a programme of study is required:
Geotechnology (MTTEKGEO) - some programmes
Required previous knowledge
