Course content
Gathering of information and cooperation. Written texts, fiction and non-fiction. Language, argumentation and communication processes. Written and oral presentations. Project work.
Learning outcome
Knowledge
Candidates who have passed this course have knowledge of:
- communication processes and how communication can be adapted to situation, aim and receiver.
- basic project theory.
- the importance of reading in connection to own language development.
- different genres within fictional and non-fictional literature, and know how literature can educate us about the development in society now and before.
- basic development within the history of the language enlighting today's challenges within language and communication.
- differences and similarities between bokmål and nynorsk, and their most important features.
Skills
Candidates who have passed this course can:
- define aims of communication and adapt level and form of what is to be conveyed to a receiver in a specific situation.
- write clearly and linguistically correct.
- write and structure reasoning texts such as discussions and reports.
- create clear, targeted and user-friendly functional texts such as reports, project documents, summaries, notes, letters, e-mails and meeting documents.
- analyze the use of rhetorical methods in fictional and non-fictional texts, and are able to argue in a successful manner.
- plan, structure and conduct oral presentations.
- plan and conduct meetings and discussions.
General competence
Candidates who have passed this course can:
- understand the importance communication and written competence has in professional and academic development, and in the engineering profession.
- express themselves written and orally in contexts relevant for an engineer.
- treat subject material in a critical, analytical and systematic manner.
- use suitable strategies to read, take notes and develop an understanding of terms.
- cooperate efficiently in groups.
- obtain information from various sources and use them in a critical, appropriate and accountable manner.
