Course content

The course will provide students with a thorough understanding of the physical principles and effects that form the basis for photonic components and systems. The course will also provide an overview of practical photonic components, as well as provide an introduction to the applications of these in optical communication systems. The following topics are covered: photon optics, photon-atom interaction, laser amplifiers, resonator optics, lasers, semiconductor optics, semiconductor sources and detectors, fiber optics and optical communication.

Learning outcome

Knowledge: The candidate has - advanced knowledge about the properties of photons, photon-atom interaction, and photon sources and detectors - detailed knowledge of the design, performance and limitations of optical communication systems

Skills: The candidate can - perform detailed calculations of functional characteristics of photonic components - perform detailed design of photonic systems based on photonic component models - use advanced optical instrumentation for characterization of photonic components and systems

General competence: The candidate can - collaborate in group in solving and carrying out laboratory tasks - document results from experimental work in report form - find, interpret and apply relevant literature for solving theoretical and practical problems

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, tutorials and laboratory exercises. The course may be held in English.
