About
Examination arrangement
Course content
Planning of electrical installations: Analysis of needs, calculation of power demands for heating and lighting. Structures for electical systems, topology and topography. Low voltage distribution systems (IT,TT,TN). Distribution and dimensioning of circuits. Safety precautions for electrical installations. Equipment and methods for protection: Overcurrent protection, earth fault protection, overvoltage protection. Discrimination. Earthing systems. Installation and equipment. Installation bus systems. Emergency and backup power supply. Software tools.
Learning outcome
Knowledge:
After completing this course the candidate shall:
- know relevant low voltage supply systems in Norway, and their characteristics
- be able to give an account of different structural system solutions, and their characteristics
- know the design, characteristics and applications of various kinds of overcurrent protection, earth fault protection and overvoltage protection
Skills:
After completing this course the candidate shall be able to:
- make basic lighting and heating calculations for buildings
- calculate fault currents and fault voltages
- calculate voltage drops
- use relevant regulations and standards for electrical low voltage systems
- dimension cross section area and overcurrent protection in electrical installations
- commission simple PLC and installation bus systems
- use instruments and equipment in the laboratory
General competence:
After completing the course, the candidate has increased:
- skills in cooperation and interdisciplinary collaboration
- ability to communicate effectively to professionals and non-specialists alike through reports and presentations
- ability to contribute to innovation and innovation processes

Lectures, compulsory exercises and laboratory work. Compulsory project work.

Further on evaluation
The final evaluation will be based on a written examination (counting 70%) and the project work (counting 30%) based on % fulfillment. Final grading will be from A to F. Both the written exam and project must be passed to receive a grade in the course. If you fail one of the parts, this must be re-taken to pass the course.
Permitted examination aids, support material code C: Specified printed and hand-written support material is allowed. A specific basic calculator is allowed. In addition, calculator Casio fx-991EX and fx-991CW are allowed.
Re-sit Exam
The written school exam can be re-taken as a re-sit in August. In the event of a re-sit examination, the examination may be changed to an oral examination.
Recommended previous knowledge
Basic electrical engineering.
