Course content
This course will focus on how to design and build roads and railways. You will learn about the traffic loads and climatic influence on the structures, and the properties of the different materials that are in use.
You will learn about surveys of existing soil conditions, and the principles for drainage. Based on this you will learn how to structurally design roads and railways based on the Norwegian design rules.
You will also learn about how roads and railways are built, typical distress mechanism and how to maintain roads and railways.
The course has a mandatory laboratory exercise were we will investigate some typical materials used for road and railway construction.
Learning outcome
Students are expected to have knowledge of:
- Traffic loads on roads and railways
- Materials that are used for different parts of the structures
- Typical distress mechanisms and relevant maintenance efforts
Students should be able to:
- Structurally design roads and railways according to Norwegian guidelines
- Plan a soil survey as basis for design and construction
- Choose materials based on requirements and properties
