TBBY2010 - condition assessment and management of restoration projects

Course content

In building protection, condition assessment and proposals for measures of the restoration objects are central to obtaining a good basis for further work on restoration. In order to carry out assessments of the condition, knowledge of the historical building craft and relevant material knowledge is central.

Analysis of damage images based on insight into existing construction may require professional collaboration with other craft disciplines or adjacent disciplines. It may also require the collection of relevant information for the work.

Reporting is central to achieving good implementation of restoration projects. This can be different types of written assessments and communication with involved parties such as owners, administration, employees or other companies. The processes will be studied and discussed through active participation in selected restoration projects.

We will also study results and experiences from different types of restoration projects, larger in the public sector, and smaller in the private sector. You will gain relevant experience for restoration assignments through exercises and in-depth assignments.

Learning outcome

A candidate who has passed the course is expected to have the following learning outcomes in relation to the study plan's description of the course, defined as knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The candidate has knowledge of:

cultural heritage administration and relevant regulations for building conservation various trades and other professional environments with relevant expertise for various restoration projects, and client expertise up to these professional environments

Skills

The candidate can:

  • carry out building documentation and condition assessment with proposals for measures based on an assessment of the object's values ​​and the customer's wishes map,
  • identify and describe common relevant damage to buildings and building parts as a starting point for measures in restoration work
  • can guide craftsmen in restoration work using traditional working methods and hire such work in smaller restoration projects

General competence

The candidate can:

  • discuss building documentation and condition assessment in a cultural heritage context
  • use different types of building documentation to get different end result in restoration project
  • adapt professional dialogue to other professional fields/occupational groups

Learning methods and activities

Excursions, fieldwork, seminar, lectures and exercises. The course is based on digital seminars and concentrated study sessions. Active participation in the sessions with exercises is necessary to be able to complete the course.

The portfolio assessment consists of two group assignments and two individual assignments. The folder is assessed with a graded grade and all parts are weighted equally. In the event of a valid absence of up to 1 missing group assignment / assignment, a new assignment is submitted by a new deadline by agreement with the course coordinator.

Invalid absence / missing group assignments more than 1, the course must be taken again the next time it is taught and a new folder is submitted.

Course materials

Articles are published in the learning platform. Lecture note and own note / documentation from fieldwork.

In addition to the reading list, material will be distributed in connection with excursions and fieldwork that is relevant to the relevant projects we are studying.
