About

About the course

Course content

In Norway, we have a rich tradition with different local and regional types of traditional rod constructions. Traditionally, many different types of utility houses that are not to be heated are built as rod constructions. Combinations of horizontal timber and poles are also common in many places.

Based on concrete examples of older traditional stave buildings, we will give an introduction to the working methods in the construction of such buildings.

The work begins in the forest where we select a topic with polite properties for the individual parts of the building. The timber is then designed in various traditional ways so that it is suitable as a subject for use in the building.

The students themselves will have the opportunity to follow the materials they have produced from forest to finished building. The work focuses on the introduction of the use of key tools such as axes, saws, cast iron, angles and various traditional marking tools.
