About the course

Course content

Introduction to transport challenges,inclusive design, transport analyses, maps and terrain models, geometric design, materials for road construction, railway design, traffic safety and operation&maintenance.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

The students will get knowledge about how the need for transport arise and is controlled. They will learn how to describe the world using maps and terrain models and how to design geometry of roads and railways. The students will also get knowledge about materials like crushed rock and asphalt and how they are used in road construction. They will also get knowledge about operation/maintenance and safety in the transport system.

Skills:

The students get an introduction to digital tools for planning and gathering of terrain information by using GPS.

General competence:

The students will understand how the different phases of the life of a structure are dependent on each other. The students will get training in performing and interpretation of laboratory tests. They will also experience how people with disabilities can use infrastructure and buildings.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, assignments. Laboratory work and demonstrations. The assignments must be accepted to give admittance to exam.

Learning activites could be organized in parallell with BSc course Transport infrastructure

The course assessment is a final written exam. In order to be eligible for the exam you must pass the compulsory assignments. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
