About the course

Course content

The subject will focus on the basic principles of highway design, road geometry and alignment, cross-section design, climatic and environmental factors, aesthetics and adaptation to surroundings.

This course is replaced by TBM4280 Road and transport planning.

Learning outcome

Knowledge Students will have knowledge of: - Basic principles of planning and design of roads. - Alignment, road aesthetics and adaptation to the environment. - Understand the road building process within the context of laws and regulations, and the role of stakeholders. Skills Students will be able to: - Construct a road with good adaptation to the environment - Implement geometric planning of roads using engineering tools. Competence Students will: - Apply basic principles for the design of roads within the context of a design problem - Assess the environmental impacts of location and design of roads - Prepare detailed plans for such infrastructure elements.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, exercises. The lectures are given in English, but the curriculum is in Norwegian.

Further on evaluation

Part assessment is the basis for the grade in the course. The parts includes a final written digital exam under supervision (weighted 70%), works (weighted 15%) and a practical test (weighted 15%). The results for each part is given a letter grade, and the final grade is calculated according to the given weighting. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral. All parts of the assessment must be passed in order to get a passing grade for the whole course.
