Course content

The course addresses various topics in fire safety engineering and fire protection of construction works. This includes the principles for analysing, designing and executing construction works with various levels of fire safety requirements, including performance-based design and assessment of sustainability. How to achieve the desired level of safety by various fire protection measures will be reviewed. The course provides knowledge of fire properties of materials, structural fire resistance and fire safety measures, and gives an introduction to principles of methods and simulation tools used in fire safety design. Through the course, the students will be given a basis for practical fire safety engineering and consulting.

Learning outcome

Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of principles, methods and tools to document that fire safety requirements for construction works are satisfied through fire safety engineering.

Skills: Understanding relations and important aspects in the field of fire safety engineering to be able to carry out qualitative risk assessments and develop fire safety strategies.

General competence: Relatively good knowledge of the fire characteristics of materials, fire test methods, and modelling of fire development and evacuation. Have an overview of relevant regulations and standards concerning fire safety and how they affect the fire safety engineering process. Be able to see fire safety engineering in the context of UN's sustainability goals.
