Course content

The course comprises fire as a risk and societal problem, and relates fire safety to UN's sustainability goals. Relevant laws and regulations. Fire dynamics - which includes chemical and physical conditions, heat transport, development and spread of fire, smoke and toxic gases. Materials’ reaction to fire, fire resistance building elements. Response of structures, installations and people during a fire. Fire testing and classification. Measures to prevent and mitigate fire, active and passive fire protection. Fire safety engineering.

Learning outcome

Knowledge: Have insight in the topics fire risk, fire dynamics and fire safety in construction works.

Skills: Know the principles for estimating and assessing factors and properties related to fire development and response of people and building parts exposed to fire, be able to carry out simple risk analyses of building fires. Be able to see fire safety design in the context of UN's sustainability goals.

General competence: Have the basis for performing simple fire safety design of buildings.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, mandatory exercises. The lectures and exercises are given in English when students who do not understand Norwegian follow the course.
