About the course

Course content

Tunnelling and rock blasting technique. Surface and underground blasting. Bench blasting, rock caverns, tunnels and shafts. Methods and equipment. Time and cost estimating. HES topics. Landscaping.

Learning outcome

The topic provides basic knowledge about rock blasting technique, tunnel excavation and surface rock excavation. Knowledge: Rock mass drillability and blastability. Excavation methods for tunnels in rock. Rock blasting technique in tunnels and quarries. Time and cost estimating for construction works. HSE in rock blasting and tunnelling. Skills: Evaluate and quantify rock mass drillability and blastability. Evaluate excavation methods for tunnels based on time and cost estimates. Design blasts in tunnels and quarries. Design the machine fleet of tunnelling and rock quarrying operations. General competence: Understand the relations between the rock mass properties, excavation methods, time consumption, costs, quality and HES. Understand the utilisation of underground space for various purposes.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and assignments.

Portfolio assignment which consists of 1 individual task and 3 group tasks.

Further on evaluation

Portfolio assessment consisting of a total of four exercises. One individual calculation assignment, two calculation problems solved in groups and one semester group assignment. All exercises are considered compulsory and must be submitted within specified deadlines. Late delivery of an exercise will lead to a deduction of points at the final assessment in the course. There are formal requirements for the assignments, e.g. that the answers must be formulated as an academic text. Information about deadlines, weighting, formal requirements, etc. for the exercises will be given at the start of the semester and published on Blackboard.

Course materials

Textbook published by the department, available as PDF. Information from suppliers. It is expected that the student will search for and use relevant journal papers and similar when answering the assignments.
