Course content
Product and Process development in a strategic and operational business perspective. The course covers industrial innovation, product development methods and contexts, managing new product development and product realization, portfolio thinking and investment scenarios, prototyping and testing strategies and design for excellence including life cycle optimizing.
Learning outcome
Knowledge: The student has a solid foundation and understanding of new product development theories - both intrapreneurship and entrepreneurship. This includes the understanding of the role of innovation and product development as a business strategy, system of processes, product and production process integration, as well as methodologies and operational frameworks.
Skills: The student has an overview of the different methodologies and frameworks and shows the ability to scientifically and systematically deal with challenges related to innovation and new product development. The candidate knows the state of the art and is able to select and adapt methodologies to solve practical and theoretical challenges. The student will be able to outline strategies and frameworks, operational plans for product development and realization, evaluate appropriate testing procedusres based on prototyping, DOE, etc, and to evaluate the life cycle impacts based on such decision inputs.
General competence: The student understands the basics of product development and innovation and its relationship and interfaces with other parts of the business system. Based on this competence s/he shall be able to deal with and participate in systematic improvement initiatives at company, team and individual levels.
Learning methods and activities
Based on seminars, the course will be made accessible for both campus- and remote students. Every student is free to choose the pedagogic arrangement form that are best fitted for her/his own requirement. The lectures in the course will be given on campus and are open for both categories of students. Lectures that sums up the main issues in the lecture will also be available on internet through the learning management system. Tutoring is given at campus in accordance to announced times. Tutoring is also available via internet. One mandatory product development project.
Further on evaluation
The final report accounts for 100% of the final grade.
