Course content
This course is aimed at PhD-candidates researching language and interaction in professional settings. The course will give foundational skills in transcribing and analysing interactions, and will put a conversational analytic approach in a wider theoretical and methodological context.
Learning outcome
Knowledge
On completing the course, the candidate should have obtained advanced knowledge of:
- conversation analytic research on professional practice
- conversation analytic approach in the analysis of language and interaction in professions
- the methodological foundation of conversation analysis (CA)
- gathering and handling authentic conversation material in an ethically sound manner
Skills
On completing the course, the candidate should be able to:
- transcribe and analyze language and interaction in conversations
- formulate and argue for conversation analytic observations
- compare the methodology of conversation analysis with other related methodologies
- formulate research questions related to the analysis of conversations in professions
- develop empirically based new knowledge on professional practice
General competence
The candidate can:
- actively participate in discussions on conversation analytic approaches to linguistic sciences and in research on the communication of professions.
- make theoretical, methodological and ethical assessments related to research in professional contexts
Learning methods and activities
The course combines lectures and seminars, oral presentations and computer lab to build technical and analytical skills in conversation analysis, as well as to reflect on relevant theoretical, methodological and ethical research questions related to conversation analysis.

Compulsory activites
Participation on three seminar days and oral presentations.
After the course the participants must hand in a first draft of an article using a conversation analysis approach on empirical data. The article should be 5000-7000 words (+/- 10%).

Requires admission to a PhD programme.
