Course content
The course consists of discussions and reflections on theoretical and methodological texts of significance for the candidates’ research projects.
Learning outcome
On completing the course the candidate should have obtained:
Knowledge
- on important theoretical and methodological questions in linguistics/philology and being able to account for this.
Skills
- being able to analyze theoretical interpretations, reasoning and academic arguments within and outside of the candidate’s discipline-specific frameworks.
Learning methods and activities
The course is held as a series of seminars. The participants must hold three presentations in three different seminars, one presentation of their own ph.d. project, as well as two presentations of scientific texts. After the presentation and comments, the text will become a topic for discussion in the group. The participants are also expected to comment on at least one of the other participants’ presentations. The participants must submit 3 academic texts of relevance for the thesis or later work, e.g. a summary of a scientific article, a conference abstract, a peer review, or a literature review, altogether approximately 5000 words. The participants are obligated to participate at the seminars (5 meetings of 3 hours).
If there are many participants, one oral presentation may be substituted with a small written assignment.
Local candidates will be given priority if too many sign up for the course.
A reduced version of the course (with fewer credits and reduced working load) may be approved.
