Course content

The course will present frames and assumptions for various social research traditions. Through dialogue-based lectures/seminars and student presentations, emphasis is placed on developing creative research designs and a critical attitude towards research. Criteria for the quality of research is given considerable weight.

Learning outcome

Knowledge - the student shall:

  • be familiar with different research designs.

Skills - the student shall demonstrate the ability to:

  • be able develop and justify a research design for a project at the size of a Master thesis.
  • be able to give a critical assessment of others' research design.

Lectures and seminars.

Form of assessment: Assignment with presentations in plenary. Both assessment and presentation are graded as pass or fail. Each part counts for half of the grade. For a passing grade in the course, both the assignment and the presentation must be assessed as passed. All parts of the evaluation must be retaken when the exam is repeated.

Required previous knowledge

Bachelor's degree in sociology. The requirement must be fulfilled to be admitted to the course.
