Course content
The aim of the course is to enable students to develop their creative use of sociology in society, and thus experience the relevance of their education. In this course, students will meet industry and/or social life, and be commissioned to use sociological knowledge in concrete problem solving. With group-based engagement and presence in the public and private sectors outside the university, students will develop tools (both theoretical and methodological), which responds to the needs that exist and have sociological relevance. Students will be evaluated both by their practical application of sociology, for their ability to communicate this externally and by their level of development of collaboration externally.
Learning outcome
Knowledge - the student shall: - understand how the theoretical, analytical and methodological knowledge in sociology can be exploited and developed in collaboration with public or private actors, or in society in general. Skills - the student shall: - acquire experience with sociological work outside the academic context. How the professional can be made relevant in the face of specific tasks and assignments will be given particular emphasis.
Learning methods and activities
The students will work together in groups. They will do an assignment in direct relation to a specific employer or a specific need in society. Building of relationships will both take place through group work and interaction with the employer.
The organization of the exercices will be presented in the beginning of the semester. It's only possible to do mandatory activities in the semesters the course is given.
Mandatory activities:
3 weeks of practice.
Attendance at the first lecture and throughout the practice period.
An oral presentation has to be given to the course coordinator and the employer.
Compulsory assignments
- 3 weeks of practice. Including mandatory attendance at the first lecture and throughout the practice period.
- Oral presentation given to the course coordinator and the employer.
Further on evaluation
The final assessment consists of a group assignment with a scope of 4000-6000 words, and an individual oral exam. In the oral exam, the student will have the opportunity to defend the assignment and to evaluate his/her own work. The extern employer will participate in the oral exam and may also ask questions.
The oral exam may be used to adjust the grade by one unit on the scale.
All parts of the evaluation must be retaken when the exam is repeated.

Required previous knowledge
Students must have a minimum of 60 credits in sociology. The requirement must be fulfilled to be admitted to the course.
