Course content

The course thematizes theoretical and didactic approaches to the early (grade 1-4) writing and reading instruction.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

The student has

  • knowledge of theories about children's development of reading and writing in the first school years
  • broad knowledge of didactic approaches to early writing and reading - including digital and exploratory approaches
  • knowledge of academic approaches that can prevent reading and writing difficulties and promote writing and reading development in students with different academic points of view and different language backgrounds

Skills

The student can

  • facilitate exploratory, creative and playful activities in the first writing and reading training
  • use conversation about students' own texts in an appropriate and creative way to strengthen students' metalinguistic awareness and reading and writing skills
  • analyse where the student is in his/her reading and writing development, and use this as a basis for adapted teaching
  • analyse children's texts with emphasis on the purpose of writing

General competence

The student can

  • analyse and assess relevant issues related to early writing and reading instruction
  • make use of insights from research into the planning and implementation of beginner training in writing and reading
  • make critical assessments of teaching plans, textbooks and teaching materials that teachers are offered for the first writing and reading training

Learning methods and activities

Different teaching methods will be used, such as discussions, lectures, group work, student presentations both oral and written.

  • Collection of empirical data from own practice in preparation for the exam
  • Analysis of student text (Nynorsk)
  • Presentation (Form of Norwegian on Presentation: Nynorsk)
  • Compulsory participation in sessions
