Course content

Students who elect field work as their form of research may choose to submit a field report to accommodate the formal demands for student credits.

Learning outcome

According to the course curriculum, a candidate who passes this course is expected to have the following learning outcome (defined as knowledge and skills)

Knowledge

The candidate has attained

  • knowledge of various forms of field work available for research in religious studies
  • knowledge of various forms of observation used for field work on religion
  • knowledge of arrangements for doing various forms of interviews during field work
  • knowledge of different forms of materials collectable from field work
  • knowledge of the ethical challenges field work in religious studies entails

Skills

The candidate has acquired skills to

  • carry out a qualified scientific field work for research in religious studies
  • construct a plan for systematic observation of a relevant field of religious practice
  • use equipment for doing various forms of interview amongst religious practitioners
  • arrange, and carry out, collection of various forms of materials from the field of religion
  • assess ethically the researcher's role during field work in religious studies

Learning methods and activities

A field report with tutoring - the tutor has to approve field work as part of the Master's programme.

Further on evaluation

The field report should be a basis of further work with the Master's thesis, and include the following:

  • a description of the field work (access, course, duration, challenges), as well as the relationship between the researcher and the group
  • an account of the methodological strategies
  • a description of analytical tools
  • a presentation of empiricism
  • ethical considerations

The report (3000 words) will be submitted after completed field work and will be assessed with a pass/fail.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Religious Studies (MRVI)

Required previous knowledge

Requires admission to the Master's programme in Religious Studies.

Course materials

Field observations and field notes. Students can also use relevant academic literature.
