About the course

Course content

The course consists of an introduction to Christianity as a world religion, with biblical studies, history, theology, and theoretical and practical ethics as points of departure. An emphasis is placed on an understanding of the manifold interpretations of Christianity as expressed by the great church traditions (Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, including Oriental), and how it is expressed in regional variations worldwide.

Learning outcome

According to the course curriculum, a candidate who passes this course is expected to have the following learning outcome (defined as knowledge and skills)

Knowledge

The candidate has attained

  • basic knowledge of historical and current Christianity
  • basic knowledge of the manifold interpretations of present day Christianity as expressed by different denominations
  • basic knowledge of the expansion of Christianity, and its regional and cultural variations
  • basic knowledge of the academic disciplines of Christian studies (biblical studies, history of Christianity, theology and ethics)

Skills

The candidate has acquired skills to

  • apply the basic historical-analytical academic disciplines in Christian studies (biblical studies, history of Christianity)
  • apply the basic systematic academic disciplines in Christian studies (theology, ethics)
  • apply relevant academic knowledge on relevant research questions and make well-founded decisions

Learning methods and activities

The instruction consists of lectures. In order to take the exam a written assignment (1500-2000 words) must be submitted and approved. The written assignment is only given in the semester when the subject is taught, but is valid for this and the subsequent semester.
