RAT3112 - Advanced MR Physics

Course content

The course deals with theoretical principles for advanced MRI techniques with relevance in clinics or research. Topics for the course are advanced methods for MR imaging of various physiological processes; perfusion (DCE-MRI, DSC-MRI and ASL), fMRI, DTI w/ fiber tracking, MRS, and multimodal MRI including PET/MRI Course content will adapt to changes as a result of technological development over time.

A candidate with a completed course should have the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge

The candidate:

  • understands MRI physics explained by mathematical models
  • can explain advanced MRI techniques that are commonly available at conventional MRI scanners
  • can explain the mechanisms of advanced MR techniques and how they present physiological processes
  • can explain how advanced MRI techniques can detect specific pathology or pathophysiology

Skills

The candidate:

  • can use mathematical models to explain MRI theory
  • understand how advanced MRI techniques operate at a clinical MRI scanner
  • can evaluate scan parameters for acquisition in MRI using advanced imaging techniques

General competence

The candidate:

  • can communicate independent work and master the professional terms
  • can evaluate if new MR-methods and techniques are applicable at specific MRI scanners
  • has an overview of the most important and common advanced techniques for imaging based on physiological processes
  • displays an overview of research in the field

Learning methods and activities

Lectures on campus and group work with mandatory submissions. Learning resources are made available via the web (E-learning platform): articles, links, short films (animations, lectures, etc.), self-tests, answers to assignments and discussion forums with students and teachers.

Students must submit six mandatory work requirements. The work requirements will be student-active and include theoretical and practical elements. The practical elements will include MR image data; either images acquired by students at their own workplace, or customized data sets. The assignments can also be linked to ongoing research projects at the department. Assignments come with instructions for practical performance. The assignments will facilitate combined theoretical and practical work within the topics. The assignments must follow described frameworks for content, structure and scope..

Specific conditions

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Advanced programme in magnetic resonance part time (MTVMRDEL)
Medical Imaging Technologies (MMEDBT)

Required previous knowledge

The course is reserved for students enrolled to the Master in Medical Imaging Technologies or postgraduate education in MRI (ViMR).
