Course content

Through clinical training, the student will encounter varied issues and various tasks that are relevant for later professional practice as a psychologist in the role of therapist. The student will also gain experience working both with children and young people and their parents. The guide will include, among other things, investigations, diagnostic assessments, contact establishment, alliance, design and implementation of investigation and treatment plans, as well as development of collaborative relationships, termination of therapy and evaluation of therapy. Case presentation in plenary is an important element in the discussion of issues related to investigation, planning and implementation of the course of treatment both theoretically and methodologically. Keeping a journal is also included in the training. Approval of internships takes place in accordance with separate guidelines for internships.

Knowledge:

The student

  • has in-depth knowledge of how to apply psychological theory and experience in order to understand clinical issues in dealing with children, young people and their parents.
  • has in-depth knowledge of how an acquired clinical understanding of children, young people and their parents can be used to adapt further investigation and/or treatment.
  • has in-depth knowledge of the effect of receiving positive and constructive feedback from supervisors and fellow students.

Skills:

The student

  • knows sensitive and attentive therapy observation.
  • can give fellow students and future colleagues constructive assessments of their therapeutic interventions and attitudes.
  • can receive and benefit from constructive feedback from fellow students and supervisors.
  • can independently carry out basic structured psychological assessments as a basis both for diagnostic assessments and case formulations, and for preparing treatment plans with recommendations for further measures and treatment of children and young people.
  • can document examination, diagnosis and treatment of children and young people in patient records, in line with current regulations.
  • can independently conduct conversations with children, including children exposed to violence, abuse and neglect.
  • can use various methods to secure feedback from patients about treatment results, process and alliance, and use these to adapt the treatment offer to children and young people.
  • can analyze and relate critically to complex professional questions, different roles and opportunities in the work with different types of mental disorders, and to interaction and division of tasks between the service levels in clinical work with children and young people.
  • can use relevant methods to identify children and family members with social and health problems including neglect, bullying, violence, abuse, substance abuse and socio-economic problems, and put in place the necessary measures and/or treatment, or refer further if necessary.
  • can independently use relational skills that are central to establishing and maintaining therapeutic alliances and collaborative alliances with children and young people and their relatives.

General competence:

The student

  • can independently investigate, diagnose and treat psychological difficulties and disorders in children and young people, and evaluate the effect of initiated interventions.
  • can apply their knowledge and skills independently to plan, implement and evaluate various evidence-based therapeutic interventions for children and young people with mild and moderate mental disorders, both at individual, family and group level
  • can apply their knowledge and skills to integrate research, clinical expertise and the patient's characteristics and wishes in order to adapt assessment and treatment for children and young people.
  • can convey a treatment rationale to children as patients/users and their relatives and use various methods to ensure children/young people and their relatives' patients/users' participation in, and choice about, their own investigation and treatment.
  • can communicate openly about gender, sexuality and sexual health and apply their knowledge of these topics in their professional practice towards children and young people and their relatives.

Compulsory assignments

  • 80% attendence at case presentation
  • 80% attendence in clinical praktice

Further on evaluation

The student has the right to take the course once more if the first attempt is assessed as failing. In the event of a failure, the course and all compulsory activities must be taken again. The subject is evaluated according to "Guidelines for the implementation and evaluation of clinical practice".

Required previous knowledge

PSYK4600

The class will be split in two from this semester. One group will take the two children's clinic courses PSYK4601 and PSYK4602. The second group will take the two adult clinic courses PSYK4603 and PSYK4604, and vice versa the following semester. A student who has not passed the practical training course, either PSYK4602 - Practical clinical therapy training - children and adolescents, or PSYK4604 - Practical clinical therapy training - adult, can not move on to the next level until this course has been passed.
