About the course

Course content

An in-depth course in developmental psychology. Based on a biopsychosocial model, the focus is on the interaction between the individual and the environment, of which the individual is a part, how this interaction is typically studied over time, and related to topics such as, for example, temperament, parenting, attachment, social relations, puberty and identity.

The course includes a developmental psychopathology perspective with an emphasis on risk and protective factors for adaptation and development of mental health problems. The course includes some skills training related to conversations with individuals in different life phases, and the candidate becomes familiar with psychological interventions that are based on knowledge of developmental psychology.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

Student:

  • has advanced theoretical, empirical and applied knowledge within the field of developmental psychology
  • has in-depth knowledge of research methodological issues with particular relevance to developmental psychology
  • has in-depth knowledge of significant psychological life themes

Skills

Student:

  • can independently analyze and relate critically to theories, methods and research results within developmental psychology
  • can analyze children and youths’ developmental pathways to psychological difficulties
  • can conduct psychologically focused conversations with individual in various phases of life

General competence

Student:

  • can critically analyze and communicate research within the fields of developmental psychology and developmental psychopathology, and convey such knowledge to other professional groups, specialists and the general public
  • can apply their knowledge and skills in developmental psychology and developmental psychopathology to contribute to innovation also in other subject areas

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, seminars, skills training, colloquia, and digital material.

Compulsory assignments

  • Written assignment
  • 80% compulsory participation in teaching related to skills training

Further on evaluation

Previously approved mandatory assignments are approved for repeat of exam. A re-sit examination will be held in August. You can register for a re-sit examination if you have - taken the examination in spring the given academic year, but did not pass- legitimate absence for the examination for this course in spring in the given academic year
