About the course

Course content

This course in developmental psychology is an in-depth study of selected theory and research from a lifespan perspective ranging from infancy to late adulthood. Topics include motor and perceptual development, parent-child interaction, language development, attachment, self-development, and identity and psychosocial development. The course provides up-to-date knowledge to understand the complex interaction between the individual and its surroundings from a crosscultural perspective.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

Students will be able to explain and discuss key developmental theories and empirical evidence relating to psychological aspects of development from a lifespan perspective. Students can critically assess factors that facilitate and/or inhibit development using nuanced and up-to-date knowledge, and discuss how development takes place as a result of a complex interaction between the individual and the environment.

Skills

Students will have a nuanced and critical understanding of central issues within developmental psychology, and will be able to use published developmental research to increase their knowledge in the field.

General competence

Students will be able to communicate and discuss central theories, issues, and debates within the selected thematic areas and exchange views and experiences based on a developmental psychology perspective.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures 2 hours per week.

Joint writing seminar at the start of the semester at the same time as the topic for the report is presented.

Reports can be written in English or Norwegian. (One large or several smaller reports)

PSY1125 or PSY1505, or PSYK4125, or PSYPRO4115 or PSY1015 or PSY1005, or equivalent
