Course content

The course is part of the full-time, post graduate teacher training programme (PPU). Together with the courses in pedagogy and subject didactics, this course provides the basis for teaching grades 5-13. Supervised practice is an integral part of the program; thus, the course content focuses on a holistic approach to teaching, and is comprised by a connection between pedagogy, subject didactics, and practical training.

This course strives to show clear relationships between the students teaching practicums and the pedagogical theory included in thin the coursework. The teaching in this course shall be research-based and development-oriented.

Additionally, the teaching practicum must be completed in the student's two teaching subjects, and students with only one subject must complete the entirety of their practice in that one subject. All practices will be closely monitored and will take place in authentic professional situations, with pupils in their schools. The students in this course will have practical training both in lower and upper secondary school. Up to 50% of the practical training can be carried out in the cultural school. Students with a background in the joint subjects in upper secondary education should meet students in different educational programs during the course of their practical training. The practice can be implemented as individual practice and practice in coulpes.

Learning methods and activities

In order to realize the objectives of the course, an interaction between practice experiences, acquisition of relevant theories, concepts and reflection is required. The practical training in teacher education spans over two semesters. Normally, the practice is discontinued with 6 weeks in the autumn semester and 8 weeks in the spring semester. The student shall as far as possible follow normal working days at the practical training school and participate in the school's meeting activities and alternative learning activities. A full-fledged practicum amounts to 70 days and involves approximately 350 working hours. These hours are 100 hours for supervised observation and teaching, 50 hours for supervision, 100 hours for preparation and post-work, and 100 hours for other activities. In addition, teacher profile, micro-teaching, appraisals, reflection and courses in "the inner life of the school" will be included as a central part of the course.

The course also entails a campus-related perspective on practice that aims to contribute to the students experiencing a holistic content that provides the opportunity to discover connections between school and campus. This teaching consists of theme days and lectures in addition to teaching about practice.

All practice in schools is compulsory. Absence does not change the requirement for the scope of practice. This means that both in cases of illness and of agreed absence, the practice must be taken again later. Absence from illness must be reported immediately to the practical training teacher and coordinator at the school. In special cases, absence can be agreed upon by written request. In that case, the practical training sessions will be postponed and will have to be retaken later.

The following guidelines apply:

  • Absence from individual lessons can be agreed with the practical training teacher. The student sends a copy of the inquiry to the coordinator.
  • Absence for up to two days can be agreed with the coordinator.
  • Absence exceeding two days must be agreed with the person responsible for the practical training course after a reasoned written request from the student.

Compulsory assignments

  • 2 Development talks
  • 6 Documents for supervision
  • Practice visits for the first semester
  • Practice visits for the second semester
  • Participation at Oppstartsdagene
  • 75% participation in lectures at Campus
  • Knowledge about the school as an organisation
  • Teacher profil
  • Reflection log

Further on evaluation

The final assessment in the course is a comprehensive assessment of the teaching practice related to learning objectives, which includes associated practice reports, practice follow-up and compulsory activities. The practice teachers and follow-up teachers write reports, all of which must be approved in order to receive a "Pass" in the course.

If the student is in danger of being "failed" in the course, the student will receive a written notice about this. The notice must be sent no later than three weeks before the end of the practice period. If the student at the end of the practice period shows action or behavior that obviously does not provide a basis for passing the practice, the student may still have the grade not passed even if prior notice has not been given.

Students who have challenges in practice can be offered an extended practice period if we believe there is not a sufficient basis for assessment, despite the fact that all compulsory activities have been approved.

If students are absent from extended practice or do not contact the course coordinator, this will normally lead to not receiving a final assessment due to a lack of compulsory activities associated with the course.

The student has access to a new practical training period once if the first time is assessed as Fail or not approved (as stated in Section 5-10 (2) of the Study Regulations). New practice may require that mandatory activities related to practice must be re-implemented. The practice coordinator makes individual considerations regarding the scope of the new practice.

For a detailed description of the assessment in the course, see the year of study's study and teaching plan.
