Course content

The course aims to show the scope of social science research methods and methodology, including research design and relevant philosophy of science.

Learning outcome

Knowledge - the student shall:

  • have knowledge about theory of science and methods in political science, with the primary emphasis on qualitative methods
  • have knowledge about the methods and techniques associated with small-N research designs

Skills - the student shall demonstrate the ability to:

  • carry out a research task with the use of a research method from the social sciences

Learning methods and activities

Class meets for 4 hours per week in half of the semester or 2 hours per week throughout the semester. The class meetings are divided between lectures in plenum and smaller group exercises.

The language of instruction can be English or Norwegian.

Compulsory assignments

  • Term paper(s)/exercise(s)/quiz(es). Specific requirements announced at the beginning of the term
