Course content

The topic for the master's thesis must be relevant to technology management and digital transformation as a subject area. Together with the specialization area, the master thesis constitutes the vocation of the programme. The theme of the thesis and the theory used must therefore be linked to the subject area covered by the specialization area. It is considered an advantage that the students work with real problems related to their own business. The topic/problem is chosen by the student in consultation with the supervisor. The Master's thesis is standardized at around 800 working hours.

Learning methods and activities

A project plan shall be established early in the semester and must be approved by the supervisor. The master's thesis can be written individually or in a group of up to three members. If a group thesis is written, the individual's contribution must correspond to an individual master thesis with regard to work effort and scope. The student is assigned a supervisor from the professional environment responsible for the specialization the student has chosen. In cases where there are several institutes involved in the specialization, the theme of the thesis, as described in the application, will determine which department is responsible for supervising the student. It may also be considered to assign a supervisor from another institute and/or an external co-supervisor if the topic of the thesis so requires. In cases where an external assistant supervisor is appointed, it is nevertheless the department at NTNU that has the overall academic responsibility. The master's thesis must be submitted within one calendar year of commencement. The agreement with NTNU can be extended once, by one semester, without justification or documentation

Mandatory activities Approved project plan

The project plan must describe the issue/problem, central theme of the assignment, choice of method and progress plan. This will typically be based on the submitted research outline in the subject PK6401. Guidance Students are entitled to up to 30 hours of supervision limited to two semesters. The number of hours includes both direct conference/supervision with the student and pre- and post-work for the supervisor. A separate agreement must be entered into which is signed by the student, supervisor and department. The course is part of NTNU's further education offer, and has a course fee. In the case of a group assignment, the group chooses individual or joint assessment of the master's thesis. At the start of work on the master thesis, a written agreement must be entered into between the department, supervisor and student. Students who are to write a group assignment must also enter into a written agreement to this effect. A separate agreement form is used. The master thesis must be submitted in NTNU's examination system Inspera Assessment.
