Course content
The aim of the course is to provide students with a basic introduction to statistical concepts, notations, and use of SPSS

- How to use of statistical analysis in quantitative studies.
- The logic behind significance testing.
- About the possibilities and limitations associated with inferences based on statistical analysis.
Skills
Students can...
- Select and use appropriate methods of analysis of own data.
- Conduct simple descriptive and inductive statistical analysis for hand.
- Conduct selected analyses on SPSS.
- Interpret the results of statistical analyses.
- Read and understand the quantitative research literature.
Competence
Students can...
- Plan the use of statistical analyses in research.
- Assess critical conclusions based on statistical analysis in the research literature.
- Gain an understanding of more advanced statistical methods.
Learning methods and activities
Teaching method and activities: Lectures, seminars and tasks, including tasks involving the use of SPSS. Lectures 2 hours per week and seminars 1 hour per week. A obligatory introductory course will be held at the beginning of the semester.
Compulsory activity: Approved participation in obligatory introductory course. (not valid for autumn 2020)
The students also have to hand in a written task which is to be approved before they can sit the final exam.

Learning in Working Life and Society (MVL)
Required previous knowledge
The course PED1005 or equivalent. Students enrolled in the Masters programme in Education and Upbringing have precedence to this course, and research methods is a prerequisite for admission. Students from the Masters programme in Counselling or Learning in Working Life and Society can apply to the Department of Education and Lifelong Learning to be admitted to the course.
