Course content

The Master's thesis is an extensive written work demonstrating the candidate's ability to work independently and in a scholarly manner in his or her chosen academic field. In particular cases several shorter works may be approved, assuming they are of the same standard and thematic coherence as an ordinary Master's thesis. Group work may also be approved assuming the candidate's section is clearly defined and corresponds to an ordinary Master's thesis as far as quality and scope is concerned.

Knowledge

Upon successful completion of this course, students have

  • deep knowledge into a specific problematics within a specific field of research; that is knowledge of the theories and concepts and the historical and cultural position of specific fields and problematics.

Skills

Upon successful completion of this course, students have the ability to

  • decide upon, formulate, develop and complete a substantial, independent scholarly work
  • choose and discuss relevant theories and methodologies
  • apply the theories and methodologies for scientific ends
  • reflect upon and discuss decisions taken and adjust the project accordingly
  • reflect upon and adjust the project according to relevant research ethics
  • mediate the results according to academic standards and this particular genre of writing

Learning methods and activities

Individual tutoring, exercises and tutoring seminars. In addition to the individual supervision, given by an assigned supervisor, a tutoring seminar is offered every semester. The seminar is a common arena for master students, where the students will give feedback on each others texts and recieve feedback on their own texts. In the second semester, during the seminar, the student will recieve tutoring under the aim of developing a project outline. On the basis of the outline, the student will be paired with a supervisor who will assist the student in completing a full project description.

Compulsory assignments second semester:

  • Develop a project proposal for the MA thesis under guidance from supervisor, and
  • submit a written literature review on a theoretical or methodological topic of relevance to the proposed thesis Project.

Compulsory assignments during third and fourth semester:

  • Presentation of chapter and response to other students presentations.
  • Give feedback on other students’ chapters

The volume of the thesis is 32,000 - 40,000 words. The number of words does not include front page, preface, table of content, literature and attachments. The word numbers must be added to the thesis, and the student is responsible for its accuracy. All students must write an abstract of the thesis of approx. 1/2 - 1 page. The abstract should be written in Norwegian and preferably in English. Students are required to stay updated on any information given by the department or course director; via Blackboard. Further on evaluation

The final assessment of the master's thesis is adjusted by an oral examination. The oral examination consists of a discussion of the thesis with the group of examiners lasting between 30 and 60 minutes.
