Course content
The course involves basic introductions to composition, the use of MIDI technology, and studio work.
Learning outcome
Knowledge:
An examinee with a completed qualification in MUSV2010
- has knowledge of traditional harmony and elementary compositional techniques for smaller ensembles
- has knowledge of elementary instrumentation and can produce scores for smaller ensembles
- has knowledge of possibilities with music technology in arranging and composing
Skills:
An examinee with a completed qualification in MUSV2010
- can utilize traditional arranging and compositional techniques in a creative way
- knows how to set up a score and how to instrumentate for smaller ensembles
- can utilize music technology in both traditional and more experimental types of compositional techniques
- can make arrangements and compositions with a personal expression
Learning methods and activities
Lectures and group instruction.
Instruction is obligatory and demands minimum 80% attendance.
Up to 10 compulsory assignments must be submitted during the course, ending with a larger arrangement/composition exercise, which is part of the portfolio. In this final exercise, the student is allowed to use the tradition and style of the music from her/his background. The final exercise is rehearsed with an ensemble or written in Sibelius, and recorded in the studio or handed in as a Sibelius file as part of the portfolio. The assessment is based on the submitted score and mp3 file or Sibelius file.

- Satisfactory participation in compulsory instruction
- Exercises in tonal harmony and harmonic analysis
Further on evaluation
Portfolio containing up to 7 assignments assessed as a whole, with the grade pass/fail.
If the course is not passed, the student must retake the whole assessment. If the candidate retakes the exam there is no need to retake the compulsory assignments, but it is strongly recommended to follow the complete course again, as the form of evaluation is portfolio assessment.

Passed MUSV2009 or MUSV2008.
