Course content

The course is based on MUSV1019 Principal Instrument 1 with Improvisation and continue to a higher level on the student's principal instrument.

Learning outcome

Knowledge: An examinee with a completed qualification in MUSV1021 has extended knowledge of

  • different vocal/instrumental directions and styles within his or her main musical area/genre
  • different instrumental, rehearsal and practice techniques and ways of conveying music alone and in ensembles

Skills: An examinee with a completed qualification in MUSV1021

  • can rehearse and present a vocal/instrumental repertoire from a broad field within his or her genre, at a higher level than what is required in MUSV1019
  • can show musicality, technical skills, knowledge of styles and insight into music theory in practical performance at a higher level than what is required in MUSV1019

Learning methods and activities

Individual instruction with satisfactory participation in compulsory instruction. To be able to take the final exam the student must attend a minimum of 80% of the lectures.

Because of overlap due to comparable learning goals, students can only register once for the individual levels of instruction within the Department of Music’s principal instrument courses.

Further on evaluation

The course concludes with a practical examination on the principal instrument. The duration of the practical examination is approximately 15 minutes. The repertoire must differ from previous exam/exams in Principal Instrument. If the student fail to attend principal instrument lectures after the department's appointment of a principal instrument teacher, the student will lose the right to take the final examination.

If the course is not passed, the student must retake the whole assessment.

Required previous knowledge

Requires admission to the Bachelor's programme or the One-year programme in Musicology and passed MUSV1019 or MUSV1020.
